Job Overview

Georgetown University is committed to building the best, most professional, highest performing, and innovative Office of Planned Giving (OPG) in American higher education. The Associate Director, Engagement & Stewardship (Associate Director) – a newly created position – provides key leadership toward achieving this goal.

The OPG supports donors in making gifts that achieve their legal, tax, financial, and philanthropic goals. Planned gifts can be made outright or through a donor’s estate, and may include gift vehicles such as bequests in a will or trust, beneficiary designations through a retirement account or life insurance policy, donor advised funds, private foundations, charitable trusts, and charitable gift annuities. Donors may fund planned gifts with appreciated securities, personal property, real estate, cryptocurrency, business interests, and other complex assets.

The Associate Director, a key member of the OPG team, is responsible for designing, executing and analyzing an engagement and stewardship strategy for all OPG initiatives with the ultimate goal of increasing planned gifts and Legacy Society membership to Georgetown University. The Legacy Society consists of donors who have included Georgetown University in their estate plans.

They work closely with the Office of Advancement and external vendors to craft OPG strategy and manage projects to leverage and increase planned giving. As well, they perform analysis of OPG engagement performance and serve as a liaison to both internal and external OPG clients/vendors. The Associate Director reports to the Assistant Vice President, Gift Planning (AVP).

Work Interactions

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Gift Planning, the Associate Director of Engagement & Stewardship collaborates with all OPG staff; OA partners (Communications, Stewardship, Donor Relations, Special Events, etc.); donors, alumni and friends; and outside vendors.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 5+ years of marketing, constituent engagement, and/or complex project management experience
  • Experience with engagement strategy development, including mission and value proposition definition, goal setting, donor/customer identification, product development, promotional channel and content development, budget management, and engagement performance analysis
  • Experience with project management and collaboration with multiple teams across an organization
  • Development experience and knowledge of nonprofit fundraising and planned giving vehicles highly desirable
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously and to consistently meet all deadlines
  • Strong skills in organization, detail-orientation and accuracy
  • Ability work independently
  • Strong editing, proofreading, and verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to exercise good professional judgment and ethical behavior in handling confidential material with sensitivity and discretion
  • Proficiency with word processing, database, and spreadsheet computer applications, specifically Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)

Experience with planned giving software
