Chelsea confirm deal to sign Carney Chukwuemeka as Aston Villa midfielder travels to London to complete £15m transfer
Chelsea have confirmed they have signed a deal with Aston Villa to sign England Under-21 midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka.
Chukwuemeka, who turned 18 in October, has made 19 appearances for Villa after making his first-team debut at the end of the 2020/21 season.
The highly rated midfielder made 11 appearances in the Premier League under Steven Gerrard last season and was hailed as a ‘star-to-be’ by former Arsenal and England winger Paul Merson.
Chelsea’s deal for Chukwuemeka is believed to be initially worth £15m, although the total package could rise to over £20m if various add-ons are met.
A statement from Chelsea read: “Aston Villa and Chelsea can confirm that the clubs have reached an agreement on the permanent transfer of Carney Chukwuemeka.
“The 18-year-old has been granted permission to travel to London to discuss personal conditions and undergo a medical.”
Chukwuemeka, who was Aston Villas Academy Player of the Year in 2020/21, will travel to London tonight to finalize the transfer and pen a six-year deal at Stamford Bridge.
He is expected to undergo his medical tomorrow, with Chelsea hoping to unveil the midfielder as a third summer signing ahead of Saturday’s Premier League opener against Everton.
Thomas Tuchel has already welcomed England striker Raheem Sterling and Senegalese defender Kalidou Koulibaly to Chelsea this summer, while the Blues continue to work on a deal for Brighton defender Marc Cucurella.
Speaking on Chukwuemeka’s talent following his first senior start for Aston Villa last August, Merson told Sky Sports: “You see the positive aspects of Villa, the young kid, Chukwuemeka was very good.
“He has a bright future. I don’t see much of children’s football. In the first half he was outstanding. He glided across the field.
You’re 17 years old and you play in central midfield in the Premier League. I mean, that’s a big request.
“He will be an absolute star. He slides across the field. He’s a nice size. He gets the ball. He looks for it and makes runs without the ball. I think Aston Villa fans who leave the game will definitely be talking about him.
