Job description: Overview

The Manager of Retail Payment Solutions (MRPS) will shape the payments experience across our enterprise. This includes our retail guests – however they choose to engage with our owned stores and independent retailers – in-store and on-line. This also includes solutions for business-to-business partnerships.

Alex Lee owned stores and its independent affiliates account for 100 million financial transactions annually. This represents a retail spend of over $4 billion. Payments are foundational to our business in deepening guest loyalty, provides a significant and ongoing source of revenue, enables sales, provides the opportunity for differentiation and strategic growth.

The scope of the MRPS includes strategy setting; anticipating changing guest behaviors and expectations; operations; managing payment expense; growing payment revenue; engagement with business and vendor technical teams; guest experience; marketing; understanding the business impacts of upcoming legislation; and a deep understanding of the Alex Lee business.

Responsibilities

1) Develop and author the payment solutions strategy and roadmap, including both physical and digital solutions. Responsible for documentation of the payment ecosystem.

2) Establish and implement retail payment solutions to continually improve the guest / customer experience. Deliver innovative, differentiated and best in class offerings.

3) Ensure Alex Lee’s payments systems and operations comply with all regulatory requirements including card brand rules and government regulations. Compliance includes PCI requirements and all other regulations from card brands, federal, state and local governments, and international requirements (where applicable.)

4) Collaborate with Alex Lee IT security to ensure proposed payments additions or changes are reviewed / approved.

5) Collaborate with the Strategic Sourcing Team Lead for review and negotiation of contracts such as with payment processing partners (e.g., Fiserv), payment networks (e.g., Visa, Mastercard), and value-added service providers (e.g., gift card providers, health care card processors.

6) Own partnerships with associations (FMI EPS, NACHA, etc.), Card Brands, Payment Processors, and other Payment Technology Partners. Regularly inform all interested Alex Lee personnel regarding changes, findings, etc.

7) Provide expertise on in-store and online payments solutions, including electronic payment terminals, related software deployments, and new payment technologies.

8) Support and guide internal partners (owned retail and Retail Automation Technical teams) to ensure payment solutions are implemented successfully and are maintained properly.

9) Support and guide internal partners (owned retail and Retail Automation Technical teams) regarding payment processing integration and technologies.

10) Drive revenues from payments services across the company. Align with cross-functional Marketing and Sales Teams to develop effective enablement of programs and messaging that drive demand for payment products and services.

11) Analyze and monitor costs, trends, and other payment-related data, as well as provide business decision support through ad hoc reporting and analysis as needed.

12) Create documentation, processes, procedures, and guidelines to ensure compliance with data privacy regulations.

13) Champion the needs of the guest/customer and business stakeholders throughout the execution of projects, ensuring what is delivered meets the strategic goals of the company as well as the original project goals, objectives, timelines, and budget.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Technology, Finance, Accounting, or equivalent work experience
  • 7-10 years of related work experience
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Retail Payment Services, Credit Card Processing, Interchange Rates, Tokenization, Funding Timing, Payments Orchestration, SNAP EBT Programs and other payment options
  • Familiarity with payment wallets and pay integrations
  • Knowledge of next-gen products, BNPL, Cryptocurrency, Order Online & Pay Cash at Retail options
  • Proven vendor management skills with solid negotiation capabilities and demonstrated influencing skills
  • Demonstrated expertise in strategic thinking, including coordinating multiple internal organizations to support complex customers and complex problems
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to “tell the story” to the business and to technical leadership in operational terms.
  • Superior presentation skills, communication skills and expertise in PowerPoint
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated experience with process improvement, workflow, benchmarking, and evaluation of business processes
  • Experience with PCI regulations and assessments
  • Understand risk topics, including third/fourth party, on-behalf-of payment models, AML, sanctions, and fraud
  • Knowledge of data privacy terminology and best practices
  • Experience in Food & Grocery is a plus
  • High level of drive, enthusiasm, and natural ability to emerge as a respected leader. Strong team building skills
  • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to develop and communicate objectives, inspire, and motivate teams, and maintain alignment with business strategy.
