The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has blown up and dismantled a large clandestine laboratory in Anambra state that was manufacturing the dangerous illicit drug crystal methamphetamine, locally called Mkpuru Mmiri, for distribution across Nigeria and export.

Chairman of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. General Mohamed Buba Marwa, made the announcement on Tuesday, August 2, 2022 while addressing the media about the development.

He said following the outbreak of crystal methamphetamine abuse in the final quarter of 2021, predominantly in the Southeast, and the cry for help from many communities in the area over the devastating impact the distribution and abuse of the dangerous stimulant was having on youth and others The agency used all available means to locate the main source of drug manufacture in Nigeria and arrest the barons behind it.

Marwa said efforts over the past seven months against the cartel behind the methamphetamine scourge have resulted in the arrests of four kingpins and a cook.

“Now we’ve added two barons and one more chef. This is undoubtedly a loud statement to those involved in the criminal illicit drug trade that it is time to stop it or risk losing it all; that means losing their liberty, investment and wealth acquired from proceeds of illegal business”,

“I am pleased to announce to the public today that after months of diligent intelligence gathering, diligent tracking, and coordinated offensive actions, we recorded a breakthrough on Saturday, July 30, 2022, when agency officials and men successfully blew up two methamphetamine manufacturing facilities, called meth labs in Lagos and Anambra.

“The one in the Nise Community, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State belonged to Paul Ozoemenam.

The owners of these two illegal meth labs were successfully arrested along with Sunday Ukah from Aba, Abia State, the cook or chemist who made the drugs for them.

Marwa said he was addressing the public about the weekend outages to raise people’s awareness of the danger meth production poses to public health and the modus operandi of the barons involved in the unhealthy activity.

The NDLEA chief said the lab busts also revealed interconnectivity between syndicates involved in meth production, adding that the chef was hired by both producers to work for the VGC lab as well as the Anambra lab to produce.

He urged the public to be sensitive to their environment.

“As we ramp up the offensive against drug traffickers, we want the public to be more vigilant and aware of the fact that methamphetamine producers always choose unsuspecting high-security environments when this happens, like the VGC property. And the reason isn’t far-fetched: They choose secured properties to prevent law enforcement officials from monitoring their activities. You can also find meth labs in remote, unsuspecting communities where residents would not be aware of their activities,”

“It is very important to note that the waste from methamphetamine production is hazardous to the ecosystem. The chemicals are toxic and once they seep into the ground, they contaminate the water table that feeds surrounding wells and boreholes.”

“And citizens who unknowingly consume the water from such springs are exposed to heart and kidney diseases and other organ diseases. Neighbors who inhale gases from the laboratory are also at the same risk. To make matters worse, production typically takes place in the middle of the night between 11pm and 4am, and so unsuspecting neighbors could have been exposed to the dangers for months or even years.”

Marwa praised the professionalism of the intelligence-led special units that were assigned this task.

“Our forensic experts and the 200-person response team that we deployed were the operational arm that carried out the mission of dismantling the labs, seizing crystal meth, precursors, paraphernalia and arresting the culprits,” he added.
