Azubuike Chibuzor Nelson, commonly known by his stage name Phyno, is a famous Nigerian indigenous hip hop rapper, record producer, songwriter, singer, stage performer, model and a television personality. He is popularly known as Ezege, Eze-nnunu, and Phyno the Playmaker. He has been described as Nigeria’s best indigenous rapper. He was born on October 9, 1986 in Abakpa-Nike, Enugu State, south-eastern Nigeria. He is currently 36 years old.
Phyno is originally from Anambra State in south-eastern Nigeria but grew up in Abakpa, Enugu, the coal city-state. He is very handsome, gifted, skilled, creative and talented. He completed both his primary and secondary education in Enugu, Nigeria and obtained both his undergraduate degree and his West African high school diploma.
After completing his primary and secondary education, Phyno went to the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) in Enugu and graduated with a National Diploma (OND) in Public Administration. His stage name Phyno, derived from the word “phenomenal”, was the nickname given to him by one of his school friends named Emeka.
Phyno developed an interest in music production during his secondary school years. He originally wanted to be a pilot but was told he could become a doctor instead, but ended up becoming a musician. During his school years, Phyno focused all his attention on music and learned to play drums and piano. He also learned to interpret every recording he heard himself.
In 2003 Phyno started his music career as a record producer for top Nigerian artists such as Illbliss, P-Square, Flavor, Mr. Raw, Bracket, J Martins, Timaya, Ruggedman and other top Nigerian celebrities. In 2007 he moved to Lagos to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. Phyno told Ifeoma Onoye that Mr. Raw is one of the few people he looks up to. After listening to the advice of his best friend Illbliss, Phyno began rapping professionally and was signed to the Sputnet Records label.
In 2010 Phyno founded his own record label “Penthauz Entertainment” and released his debut studio album “No Guts No Glory”. Phyno has won multiple awards and recognitions both in Nigeria and abroad. In 2012, along with Olamide, he won Best Collaboration of the Year at the Nigeria Entertainment Awards and Best Rap Single at the Headies Awards.
In 2013, he won the Best Collabo Award at the Headies Awards and Best Rap Artiste of the Year at the City People Entertainment Awards for his hit single “Ghost Mode,” which featured Olamide.
His debut studio album, 2014’s No Guts No Glory, has included hit singles like Ghost Mode, Man of the Year, Parcel and O Set with P-Square. He is known for rapping in the Igbo language.
In 2015 he released his second debut studio album “2 Kings” with hit singles like Oringo, Connect, Yayo, Asai and Nnunu feat. Stormrex. In 2016, he released his third studio album, The Playmaker, which featured hit singles like “Fada Fada, a Ghetto Gospel” and “Testimony,” which he used in acknowledgment of Almighty God for raising him from the grass to grace.
In 2014 Phyno won multiple awards including Best Rap Act of the Year, Rap Artiste of the Year and Rap Album of the Year at the City People Entertainment Awards. That same year, 2014, Phyno also won Most Gifted Hip-Hop at the Channel O Music Video Awards. In 2015, Phyno was nominated for Best Hip-Hop at the MTV Africa Music Awards.
Phyno has been described as one of Nigeria’s wealthiest and most influential artists with an estimated net worth of US$12 million. He made his money from album sales, live performances, concerts, youtube earnings, streaming and his personal entrepreneurial businesses.
Phyno is currently the brand ambassador for Airtel Nigeria, one of the fastest growing telecom companies in Nigeria.
