Transfer: I’m hearing your name too much – Gary Neville blasts Chelsea owner, Boehly
Manchester United legend Gary Neville has slammed Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly amid the Blues’ current summer transfer activity.
Neville said he hears Boehly’s name too often, accused him of signing players without thinking and compared his actions to those of the Glazers and Ed Woodward.
According to him, the American billionaire looks like he wants to play football manager at Chelsea.
Chelsea have already signed the likes of Raheem Sterling from Manchester City, Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli, Gabriel ‘Gaga’ Slonina from MLS club Chicago Fire and several others in the summer transfer window so far.
The west London club have also joined the transfer race to sign Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong and are drawing closer to Brighton left-back Marc Cucurella.
Speaking of The Overlap, Neville said: “The American [Todd] Boehly looks like he wants to play football manager.
“There’s something in him. He’s wandering around a bit and they’re a bit panicky now.
“You’re like, ‘oh they’re coming for de Jong this morning’ because he feels he has to do something, that pressure is on him.
“He wouldn’t have had that pressure if he kept the people who were there before and just let them work for a year or two, but it’s going to be an interesting season for Chelsea. Obviously they’ve lost a couple of defenders.” Well. They could lose even more against Barcelona.”
He added: “You [Chelsea] almost jumping around because it feels like him [Todd Boehly] have to do something.
“I hear his name too often. It feels like it’s not disrespectful, you know he’s a prominent guy, he just bought the club and everything.
“He has a fund at his disposal that will be paid out at £2.5 billion but to get rid of all these football operations that have been incredible for so many years and to come in and do it yourself feels like Ed Woodward to me. We’ll see how it develops.
“I mean, look, let’s get this straight first – they are [Chelsea] react to what is available and what other clubs are doing.
“Second, you hear his [Boehly] Name too much and he’s too prominent. Check out what Manchester City and Liverpool are doing [Txiki] Begiristain at City is their sporting director.
“Some people might not even know that. Some people know this, but some people don’t even hear it, don’t even see it, but they go about their business quickly and efficiently.
“When clubs are going well you don’t hear who signs the players. You just sign them. Chelsea have that, Manchester United under The Glazers, Ed Woodward, ‘I’ll take over, I’m the man now.’ ‘, ‘I go out and basically buy the players’ and then they get linked to any player Barcelona want, any player City want, any player United want.”
